SPOILER WARNING: Plot details follow. Caution is advised!

Whitby Mansions is a series of flats located in Marylebone, London where Matthew Fairchild moved to in December 1903.

Description[]

Whitby Mansions is a large building made of pink stone which rises in turrets and spires—Cordelia Carstairs once remarked that these design elements makes it resemble a wedding cake. There are black double doors with a brass bell nearby. The lobby of the ground floor is dimly lit with furniture made up of mahogany and dark wood—much like what is found in hotels.

There is a lift with gold fixtures and expensive wallpapers. The hallway of the third floor is red-carpeted, and the door to each flat has a golden numerical indicating the flat number.

Flat no.6, belonging to Matthew Fairchild, has a square entryway with a huge Greek vase painted with several Greek figures, a potted palm, and a hatstand. The drawing room has a velvet covered sofa, and a Turkish rug covers the floor. The flat is well-kept with heavy oak pieces adorning the shelves and colorful jackets hanging on the stand. There is a portrait of the Merry Thieves hanging on the wall above the fire.

Additionally the flat also provides a motorcar and a few maids and servants.[1]

History[]

Matthew had been looking into getting a flat in the Whitby Mansions for some months and had even put a deposit on it, though he had not acted on it for some time. In December 1903, Matthew had a fight with his parents regarding the issue of his growing alcoholism, after which he decided it was finally time to move into the flat. He also took his pet dog Oscar with him. A few days later, his parabatai James accompanied him to his flat where he helped Matthew settle in.

Around a week later, a Cordelia Carstairs visited Matthew in his flat, to talk to him about something she was upset over and the pair decided to take a trip to Paris. Matthew consulted with one of his neighbors, Gus Huntley—whom he had previously befriended—to watch his dog and borrow some clothes for Cordelia.[1]
