Wayland the Smith is a famous Shadowhunter credited as the first weapons maker.[1] Before the Iron Sisters, the Waylands were famous as weapon makers.[2]

He is particularly famous for forging Excalibur (also called Caliburn), Joyeuse, Durendal, and Balmung—the swords of the heroes Arthur, Charlemagne, Roland, and Sigurd, respectively.[3][4] Additionally, in Nephilim society, he is also famous for having made Cortana for the Carstairs family and the matched set of Morgenstern swords, Heosphoros and Phaesphoros.[2]

Trivia[]
- This character, as well as some of the named weapons forged by him, is based on the legendary blacksmith Wayland the Smith from Old Norse and English mythologies.
- The blade Joyeuse that Wayland made has conflicting ownership in the series. In a flashback in City of Heavenly Fire, John Carstairs tells Emma Carstairs that the blade was that of Lancelot; while in Chain of Iron, Cordelia Carstairs claims it belonged to Charlemagne. It is unclear at this time if this is a mistake or retconned.
