Etymology[]
Verlac is a compound name. Ver means worm or serpent, and lac means lake.[1][2]
Cassandra chose Ver because it sounds a lot like "verre", which is glass in French, so saying the name would make it sound like it translates to Glass Lake.[1]
Symbol[]

The Verlac family ring
As a reference to the meaning of their name, the Verlac family symbol is a snake; the design of their crest of arms, in particular, is of a serpent rising out of a lake in coils.[3] Their family ring is in the shape of one.[4]
Trivia[]
- Sona Carstairs's character was originally named "Colette Verlac".[5] After the name change, she was intended to be a widow of Theodor Verlac,[6] with whom she may have had children.[7] This was all later retconned in The Last Hours.
