Teleportation rings are rings enchanted to magically transport the wearer someplace else.

Description[]

There are three known rings, but only the description of two of them is known. Axel Mortmain's had been silver and needed to be twisted on the wearer's finger in order to teleport the wearer.

A variant of the ring was Jace's Morgenstern family ring; which was dark silver with a pattern of stars around the band and the letter M carved into it. This ring needed to be twisted on the wearer's finger three times but—unlike Mortmain's ring—it did not teleport the wearer, it instead sends a summons to the connected ring—Valentine's.[1]

History[]

According to Axel Mortmain, he saw a warlock of the Pandemonium Club create a teleportation ring. At one point in the 1800s, he got ahold of his own.[2]

Decades later, the Shadowhunter Valentine Morgenstern came to possess the same ring, and also possessed a variant of teleportation rings.[3]

At some point, Valentine turned his Morgenstern family ring into a variant of a teleportation ring. Jace Herondale inherited the ring, at first believing it was the Wayland family ring, and wore it unknowingly for years. In 2007, he was knocked unconscious by Hodge Starkweather, who took his ring to summon and bring Valentine into the New York Institute to collect the Mortal Cup.[1]

Later on, Jace gave the ring to Magnus Bane as he needed something of Valentine to track him using a tracking spell. Magnus gave the ring back to Jace but he didn't feel comfortable wearing it on his finger again, so he hung it on a chain around his neck.[4] When Jace left to find Jonathan, he left the ring to Clary who then wore it around her neck.[5]

Malachi Dieudonné also possessed a copy of the ring which he used to communicate with Valentine when he was secretly working with him.[5]

Upon Valentine's death, his ring went to his son, Sebastian; who used it to teleport himself and Jace on several occasions.[6][7]

When Jonathan died, his ashes and the Morgenstern ring were put in his silver box which Clary threw into Lake Lyn.[7][8]
