Svefnthorn is a magical, demonic weapon.

Description[]

The weapon is described as looking like a "goth fireplace poker" with a long, iron spike that has barbed wire at the end of the blade. The blade itself twists like a corkscrew. It is made from a very rare substance called black adamasadamas corrupted by a demon realm.

The Svefnthorn contains an enormous amount of demonic magic that only a warlock could survive if stabbed. It is meant to increase one's magical abilities by linking the warlock to a specific demon realm and its ruler and allowing them to draw power from them. It also seemingly slowly turns them into a Greater Demon.

One must be stabbed by it three times to complete its magic and to survive. Nothing can reverse its effects. If, after two strikes one chooses not to be stabbed a third time, the power will grow until it is wild and out of control causing them to die. When attuned to a specific demon, the third strike of it will put one under the demon's thrall.

Due to the danger it poses to warlocks who use it, the Spiral Labyrinth has forbade its use since 1500.[1]

History[]

In 2010, Sammael had Shinyun Jung retrieve the weapon and attune it to him. She then used it on Ragnor Fell to get him under Sammael's control, and then herself, once given permission.

When breaking into Magnus's apartment to steal the Book of the White to help carry out their master's plans, Shinyun stabbed Magnus Bane with it. After he tracked them to Shanghai, Shinyun confronted him and stabbed him a second time. She then explained that the thorn was a part of his magic now and that the third strike had to be his choice, but he would die without it.

In Diyu, while Shinyun and Sammael were distracted trying to force Magnus to agree to a third thorning, Alec stabbed himself with the Svefnthorn. It is believed that due to the Alliance rune he had put on the night before tying himself to Magnus, he was able to survive. He used the power from the thorn while the demonic magic waged a war with the seraphic magic inside him, to pull the Svefnthorn's ball of magic from within Magnus. Shinyun then took this magic for herself and became a Greater Demon. During the transformation, the Svefnthorn attached itself to her in the form of a tail.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Mo Ye and her husband Gan Jiang claimed to have had their own Svefnthorn at one time. Though Mo believed it to still be in the back of their shop, Gan denied it saying he had lost it long before Shanghai was even built.[1]
