A suggenes is a term used to refer to the person at a Shadowhunter wedding who walks the bride or groom along the aisle to their betrothed welcomes the latter to the former's family,[1] similar to the tradition of "giving away" the bride to the groom in mundane ceremonies.
Typically, a suggenes is someone they consider to be a close and significant person in their life, and is almost always one's parabatai if they have one.[2] It is not necessary, or sometimes not possible, to have a suggenes.
Known suggenes
- Will Herondale wanted his parabatai Jem Carstairs to be the suggenes which is impossible due to his situation, so Will planned to walk down the aisle without a suggenes.[3]
- At Helen and Aline's wedding, Julian Blackthorn was the suggenes of his half-sister and Jia Penhallow was her daughter's.[1]
- Jace Herondale stood as the suggenes of Alec Lightwood when he married Magnus Bane, and though warlocks had no suggenes tradition, Catarina Loss accompanied him to the alter.[4]
Trivia
- The Greek word suggenes (συγγενής) means "of the same kin, akin to, related by blood".[5]
