A suggenes is a term used to refer to the person at a Shadowhunter wedding who walks the bride or groom along the aisle to their betrothed welcomes the latter to the former's family,[1] similar to the tradition of "giving away" the bride to the groom in mundane ceremonies. In some cases, their duties extend to reciting the second vows in the ceremony, if the bride and groom so choose.[2]
Typically, a suggenes is someone they consider to be a close and significant person in their life, and is almost always one's parabatai if they have one.[3] It is not necessary, or sometimes not possible, to have a suggenes.
Known suggenes[]
- Will Herondale wanted his parabatai Jem Carstairs to be the suggenes which was impossible due to his recent transformation into Silent Brotherhood; so Will walked down the aisle with Jem's cane and the memory of him as his suggenes. Meanwhile, Tessa Gray was accompanied by Sophie Collins as her suggenes.[4]
- James Herondale also chose his parabatai, Matthew Fairchild, to be his suggenes, while Cordelia Carstairs chose her prospective parabatai, James's sister, Lucie Herondale.[2]
- At Helen and Aline's wedding, Julian Blackthorn was the suggenes of his half-sister and Jia Penhallow was her daughter's.[1]
- Jace Herondale stood as the suggenes of Alec Lightwood when he married Magnus Bane, and though warlocks had no suggenes tradition, Catarina Loss accompanied him to the alter.[5]
Trivia[]
