Shanghai Shadow Market, also known as the Sunlit Market, is the Shadow Market in Shanghai, China, located in the Downworld Concession.
Description[]
Unlike most Shadow Markets, this Market operates 24 hours a day. To accommodate vampires, the Market has a Night Quarter with blacked out so they could participate safely during daylight hours. Just past this is an old and renowned faerie bookstore called the Celestial Palace.
It has been noted that unlike most Shadow Markets, the Shanghai Shadow Market is well organized. Since the Market does not have to reassemble like most Markets, booths are lined up in neat rows, permanent buildings, and cafés with outdoor seating. The outer-ring of shops are primarily food stalls. In the center is a massive fountain that sprays different colors with a stone dragon, phoenix, tiger, or tortoise on each corner.[1]
History[]
In 2010, the Market had a couple of new customers that seemingly came from nowhere. Shinyun Jung and Ragnor Fell frequented the market regularly, buying everything from spell books and components to blood in bulk. The Downworld Concession were suspicious of the newcomers and word got back to the Institute. They dispatched a Shadowhunter to keep an eye on the situation, but the warlocks ended up cornering him and making him help them.
Later that year, Alec Lightwood, Magnus Bane, and their friends visited the Shadow Market to learn more about the Svefnthorn and Diyu. Alec and Magnus met with Peng Fang, a vampire blood dealer, to try to get more information on Shinyun and Ragnor's activities. Meanwhile Izzy, Clary, Jace, and Simon visited the Celestial Palace, an old faerie bookstore, to do some research.
They later met up with Ke Yi Tian for an appointment with the faerie weaponsmiths Mo Ye and Gan Jiang. When they left the couple, they noticed a burst of light and some screams coming from the center of the marketplace. They returned to find Shinyun and Ragnor opening a permanent Portal to Diyu. Demons began flooding out of the opening and they fought them off till more Shadowhunters arrived. They then went through the Portal to close it and protect the residents of the Market.[1]
