Scalding fever is a common disease that affects Shadowhunters.

Information[]

Shadowhunters normally contract the disease as infants, while it is mild, though some get it later in life. It is highly contagious and as such one is typically quarantined from others. After having contracted the illness once, you will develop an immunity to it. As it is unique to Shadowhunters, mundanes and Downworlders are unable to catch the disease.

Symptoms of scalding fever include abdominal pain, fever, chills, and fatigue. The treatment is a grayish elixir prepared by a Silent Brother that smells and tastes terrible. Otherwise it is just a matter of time and waiting for it to pass.[1]

History[]

In 1900, while training with Lucie Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs at Cirenworth, James Herondale suddenly collapsed in pain and with a fever. After Brother Enoch arrived and confirmed it was in fact scalding fever, Lucie and Elias Carstairs were sent away as they had not had it before. Cordelia, her mother, and the mundane servants were able to remain and help take care of him. Cordelia stayed by his bedside while he drifted in and out of consciousness, offering him water when he woke or to read to him. Eventually, after several days, James recovered and was able to join his family in Idris.[1]
