The relationship between the Shadowhunters Clary and Jace began in 2007. The couple run the New York Institute together and are currently engaged. As heroes of the Mortal and the Dark wars, their love story became famous among other Shadowhunters.
History[]
After their first encounter at the Pandemonium Club, Jace became incredibly curious about Clary and had been the one to bring her to the Institute. Initially distant, particularly due to Jace's attitude towards love being a weakness, the pair grew closer as they worked together to look for Clary's mother until they eventually shared a kiss on Clary's birthday. Their blossoming romance was put on hold when Valentine led them to believe that they were both his children.[1]
They tried to maintain a familial relationship, with Jace blaming his feelings for Clary on his demon blood. Clary briefly tried to move on by dating Simon, but this soon ended when Clary was forced by the Seelie Queen to have "the kiss that she most desires" with Jace.[2] Eventually, the pair found out that they were not actually siblings and were able to be together.[3]
After a brief separation and struggle due to Jace's unwilling bond with Sebastian,[4] the two remained strong and fought through another war together.[5] They'd planned to travel together after the war, but their plans were axed when, after Maryse stepped down, they were voted in as the new heads of the Institute and they accepted.
Jace first attempted to propose to Clary in 2012, during Isabelle and Simon's engagement party, and though they were interrupted,[6] Clary told him that the answer was no upon their return, surprising Jace. Clary had been having ominous dreams of her death and feared leaving him in pain.[7] When she eventually realized that the death she was seeing wasn't hers but was in fact of an alternate version of hers,[8] Clary herself proposed to Jace, after surviving another war and this time during Alec and Magnus's wedding.[9]

Behind the scenes[]
- Clary and Jace's relationship has been adapted multiple times in different forms of media. It has been adapted into two graphic novels (in the original which wasn't published until completion, and again in the latest adaptation which is still ongoing) which followed canon closely, and twice onscreen: for the film and the TV series). Though their connection remained intact in both live adaptations, their story and "endings" differ slightly from the source material's.
- Because the film was not followed up with a sequel, their film counterparts were unable to further pursue a relationship as they were led to believe that they were siblings, though Jace remained steadfast in his belief that they weren't truly siblings.
- Though Clary and Jace became a couple in the TV adaptation, the show ended after a twist that isn't from the books where Clary lost her memories and their reunion a year after was left open-ended, though with Clary showing signs of remembering Jace.
