“ | Raphael said you were stupid, and it served you right. Six hours later he led every vampire he could, and some of the werewolves, out of the talks. He set the building on fire as he went. | ” |
–Janus on Raphael, Forever Fallen |
Raphael Santiago is a vampire who joined the resistance against the Legion of the Star in Thule.
Biography[]
- This character's history is identical to that of his alternate dimension counterpart up until just before the Dark War, where the timeline split and the following changes took place.
Rebellion[]
When Sebastian Morgenstern was beginning to take over the world and was forming alliances with the remaining Downworlders, Raphael managed to round up the remaining vampires.[1] Vampires thrived in Thule somewhat, able to walk freely because of the world's dying sun and safe from demons who did not like to eat them.[2]
Though not pleased by the destruction of the warlocks as a result of Sebastian's rampage, Raphael still considered making a deal with Sebastian for the protection of his vampires. However, when Sebastian killed Lily Chen for spying on their negotiations for a werewolf, Raphael, though initially acting nonchalant and uncaring about her death, took vampires and werewolves out of the talks and burned the building down, effectively declaring war against Sebastian who was left inside the burning building before being rescued by his lackey.[1]
Eventually, Raphael relocated to Los Angeles and joined Livia Blackthorn's group of rebels.[2][1] Despite this, Sebastian was still able to trick many vampire cults into allying with Sebastian under the pretense that he would send them to a new world with more people to feed on once Thule's population gets depleted. Raphael believed that those were idiots and would simply, eventually starve.[2]
In 2014, the Julian Blackthorn and Emma Carstairs of another dimension arrived in Thule. When they were determined to try to find the last remaining warlock, Tessa Gray, Raphael offered his flying motorcycles in exchange for information. They informed him that in their world, New York was still standing, that he was dead, and that Lily Chen was running the New York vampire clan. Raphael acted horrified when he heard that he had sacrificed himself for Magnus Bane and that Magnus and Alec Lightwood had named their child after him.
Later on, with the help of Tessa, Julian, and Emma, the rebels made plans to enter the Silent City and steal the Mortal Instruments in order to finally end Sebastian's reign. Despite Raphael and his group of vampires scouting the area, they were still ambushed by the Legion of the Star. During the battle, Raphael took guard of Tessa, as she was extremely weak from having opened the door to the Silent City. After Tessa died and caught fire, Raphael joined the rest of the rebels in fighting the Endarkened warriors.
Once Emma killed Sebastian, all the Endarkened fell, giving Raphael and the rebels a big step towards victory and the chance to reclaim and fix their world. Just before Emma and Julian left for their world, Raphael asked them to tell Magnus and Alec to rename their child.[2]
When Thule's Jace Herondale moved to the world that the Emma and Julian they'd met came from, Jace used Raphael's existence to motivate and blackmail Lily Chen into helping him.[1]
