The pithos is the name given by Christopher Lightwood to a device that is used to transfer runes from the body of one Shadowhunter to another.

Description[]

It is a hard square made of adamas and covered with angelic runes that have been slightly altered. If you press one of the runes, it transforms into a shape resembling a stele.

History[]

The pithos was created and used by Belial to transfer runes from the bodies of the murdered Shadowhunters to the body of Jesse Blackthorn, which he had possessed and needed to make stronger and into a warrior.

Thomas Lightwood found it clutched in Lilian Highsmith’s hands when she died and pocketed it. While Thomas was locked up in the London Institute’s Sanctuary, accused of Lilian’s murder, he passed it over to his friends who took it to the London Shadow Market for investigation. Lilith, disguised as Magnus Bane, showed them how it opens into the semblance of a stele. When Christopher showed it to Grace, she toyed with it and figured out how it transfers runes from a Shadowhunter to another. That night, Belial sent an eidolon demon disguised as Matthew Fairchild to get the pithos back from Christopher.

After Charles Fairchild was attacked and nearly died, the pithos was given back to Christopher for care.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The object may have an alternate name as "pithos"—which is a Greek word for a container—was given to it by Christopher Lightwood.[1]
