Matilda was a great-aunt of Henry Branwell.
History[]
When Matilda had aged and gotten old, she looked after her young great-nephew Henry. Matilda recognized Henry's brilliance, and when he was teased by other children, Matilda would give him books and remind him that he was smarter than them. Because of this, Henry became very fond of her.
Though Henry was born with the red hair of another relative, his second son, Matthew retained her side's blond hair; Henry named him after her, particularly after his nickname "Matty" for her. Henry also hoped to name his unborn daughter after her, had Charlotte not suffered a miscarriage in 1901.[1]
