Maryse Lightwood was a Shadowhunter and the former co-head of the New York Institute with her husband Robert Lightwood. Both were exiled from Idris after their involvement with The Circle. She was the mother of Alec, Isabelle, and Max, as well as the adoptive mother of Jace.
Biography[]
- This character's history and characteristics are identical to that of her alternate dimension counterpart up until just before the Dark War, where the timeline split and the following changes took place.
During the Battle of the Burren in Thule, the Clary of that world was killed by Lilith before she could separate Jace and Sebastian. Sebastian then started his rampage across the planet, wiping out Shadowhunters unless they swore fealty to him.
Maryse and Robert lost the New York Institute when it was sacked and handed over to the Ashdown family, who supported Sebastian. During the battle of Alicante, Maryse fought against Sebastian's army. Isabelle was later killed by Sebastian while fighting in Idris, and Alec and Magnus committed suicide in New York.
At some point, Maryse found her way to the headquarters of the rebels where she was an active member until her death. In 2014 she was eventually captured by the Endarkened in Los Angeles and brought to Sebastian on the beach, where a recently arrived Julian Blackthorn and Emma Carstairs witnessed her being dragged before him. She had been tortured, and her hair cropped short. Sebastian accused her of aiding the rebels and attempting to break the bond between him and Jace and told Jace to kill her.
As her last words, Maryse asked him if he remembered the song that she used to sing when he was a boy. She then sang it and Jace decapitated her midway through the song.[1]
