Learn About Loss is the fourth short story in Ghosts of the Shadow Market: An Anthology of Tales, co-written by Cassandra Clare and Kelly Link. In the print edition which follows the stories' chronological order, it is the third story.

In a small town lost to despair, a dark carnival of a market appears. Faeries and warlocks we know converge, and the fate that will one day produce Kit Herondale is sealed.[1]

  • This story is set in the 1936[2] and involves Jem Carstairs—as Brother Zachariah—visiting a dark carnival and dabbling in demon summoning.[3]
  • This installment introduces Tobias's great-grandson, who becomes a very skilled magician famous in the Shadow Market.[4]
  • This story is set in Tennessee.[5][2]
  • Will is featured in this installment. With the installment set a year before his death, when Will had gotten sick and old, we see "Jem grappling with Will's mortality." "The end of the story gives us a bittersweet moment of Jem and Will togetherness that highlights their bond.."[6]
  • This story is told from two points of view: Brother Zachariah and Sister Emilia.
