Hu Shen is a gigantic tiger but apparently also a faerie of legend. He acts as a guide for lost travelers.

Hu Shen is a great faerie of legend who guides lost travelers.
He was called upon by Ke Yi Tian in September 2010. He helped guide Tian to Isabelle Lightwood in the Hell of Silences in Diyu. Hu Shen killed the demons surrounding and laughing at her while Tian freed her from her confinements. Hu Shen then accompanied them—Isabelle riding on his back—to rescue Simon Lewis and meet up with the others of their group—Isabelle claims she made sure Hu Shen came along as she was sure Simon would be disappointed to have missed it. Sammael froze up upon seeing the tiger and quickly fled, leaving the Portal open so some Baigujing demons could come through. Hu Shen fought some of them off with the others and once they were dispatched he left; the Shadowhunters of Shanghai owing him a favor.[1]
