SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Chain of Gold follow. Caution is advised!

Grace's bracelet is a bracelet that, when used, hones Grace Blackthorn's siren-like abilities.

Description

It is a silver bracelet engraved with the inscription "Loyaulté Me Lie": meaning "Loyalty Binds Me", which is said to be the Cartwright family motto.

The bracelet was enchanted—most likely by Belial—in order to allow Grace's abilities to work on James Herondale. It is seemingly also meant to make him otherwise vulnerable to Belial's influence.[1] Fighting against its effects can physically harm James. Additionally, taking it off causes a hangover-like effect.

The charm on the bracelet also prevents people from placing blame on it or thinking it could be the problem.[2]

History

The bracelet is said to have once belonged to Grace's birth mother. It is claimed to be the only thing of her parents' Grace has. Tatiana Blackthorn came into possession of the bracelet after she adopted Grace, and has since had it enchanted.

Due to James's Greater Demon blood, Grace's powers were unable to affect him. Under Tatiana's orders, Grace asked James to steal the bracelet back for her. After he retrieved it, Grace requested that he wear it for her, as a sign of their friendship. Once the bracelet was put on, he believed himself in love with Grace and never took it off. Tatiana used this infatuation to torture him.[1][3]

Shortly after Tatiana and Grace moved to London, the powers of the bracelet began to wane. After Tatiana was attacked and poisoned by Khora demons, Grace took this as her opportunity to end things and broke up with him, requesting he return the bracelet.

A couple of days later, while in the garden talking to Jesse's coffin, Grace was attacked by Namtar. The demon told her he had been sent by Belial to castigate her for taking the bracelet off of James, as it was not her decision to make. When she tried to explain that the enchantment was not working, he simply told her he would see to its strengthening and that she was to put it back, or else the consequences would be terrible. Grace complied and paid James a visit to replace the bracelet on him. It had indeed been strengthened as it took effect immediately and James returned to his complacent, smitten state. Taking advantage of this, she asked him to destroy an automaton in Blackthorn manor, which caused the house to burn down.

Later, at his engagement party, she attempted to make a plan with him for them to still be together after his marriage blanc to Cordelia Carstairs. James, choking back the words to refuse, felt terrible pain and tasted blood in his mouth as a result of disagreeing with the bracelet.[1]
