Filomena di Angelo was a Shadowhunter from Rome who visited the London Institute on her travel year in 1903.
Biography[]
In 1903, Filomena left her home in Rome to go on her travel year. One of her stops was in Peru where she learned a new waltz.
In December of the same year, she traveled to London, making it just in time for James Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs's wedding. Over the next few weeks, she stayed in the Institute in name only, as she was far more interested in seeing the sights of London and going to museums and exhibitions.
One night, Lucie Herondale convinced her to go to Anna Lightwood's party to mingle more with Enclave and meet boys other than James to fawn over. Lucie ended up leaving the party early, trusting Filomena to get back to the Institute safely. She left Anna's flat by herself close to dawn. During her walk, she was attacked by Belial, who had been murdering Shadowhunters in previous nights. She managed to fight him off at first but he chased her and stabbed her repeatedly till she could no longer fight back. After she died, he used the pithos to steal her Strength rune.
She then returned as a ghost, screaming and confused. Another ghost noticed and went to Lucie to tell her where she was. Lucie and the others went to Limehouse to speak with her in hopes she could help them catch the killer. While she was able to provide them with the killer's cloak and blood, she did not know his identity and mentioned he had stolen her strength—though not specifying that she meant her rune. Before she left, she asked Cordelia why she had not saved her, which stayed with Cordelia for a long time.[1]
Personality[]
Filomena was very friendly and extremely flirtatious.
Physical description[]
Filomena was a very attractive girl with long, smooth dark hair that she usually kept up. Her eyes were dark and heavy-lidded and she had dark red colored lips.[1]
Appearances[]
- Chain of Iron (first appearance)
- Chain of Thorns (appeared briefly as a ghost)
Trivia[]
- Filomena's name comes from two other works of literature: Boccaccio's Decameron and Rick Riordan's The Heroes of Olympus. Though the name was chosen prior to the global pandemic of 2020, Cassandra Clare found it ironic to have Filomena come from Boccaccio's work.[2]
- The dedication to Chain of Iron is addressed to Rick, thanking him for allowing her to use the surname of his character Nico di Angelo, in kind to him having done the same for her with the name Magnus.
- Reportedly, Riordan laughed when he found out Filomena's fate.[3]
