“It felt so real, so utterly real—”

This article depicts a subject within the The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones film universe, and as such, it either does not play a role within or differs largely from the established continuity and canon of the books of The Shadowhunter Chronicles.

I'm the one who's always been there for you, not him! I'm in love with you. And it's clear that you don't feel the same way.

–Simon to Clary Fray, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Simon Lewis is a mundane and Clary Fray's best friend. His life was changed drastically when Clary introduced him to the Shadow World.

Biography[]

Simon has known Clary and her mother, Jocelyn Fray, since he was a child. He developed a very close friendship with Clary and fell in love with her though he kept it a secret.

When Clary turned eighteen, he accompanied her to a nightclub in the city called Pandemonium. While he was going to get drinks, Clary saw some strangers killing a man. Clary left the club screaming, and Simon went after her, skeptical of her explanation of what happened. They decided to end the night, and took a cab back to their homes.

The next day, they both went to Java Jones coffee shop to see Simon's friend Eric read poetry. During the event, a girl tried to flirt with Simon but he didn't realize it until later, when Clary pointed it out to him, to which he replied he was saving himself for someone else. Clary seemed to see something and left him alone in the coffee shop. Simon later broke into Clary's apartment to check on her but was hit by her with a fire extinguisher—not realizing it was him.

They then went to Luke Garroway's home. When they arrived, Jace Wayland told Simon to wait outside but Simon refused until Clary asked him to. While outside the apartment, a couple police officers showed up and Jace—having seen that they were actually demons—killed both of them. Afterward, Clary collapsed from a bite from one of the demons. Jace decided to take her to the Institute to be healed and Simon went with them.

While there he learned alongside Clary about the existence of Shadowhunters and Clary being one of them. They also discovered that a warlock named Magnus Bane had erased Clary's memories. In their search for answers, Clary, Simon, Jace, Alec, and Isabelle attended a party at Magnus Bane's apartment. There, Simon was drugged by the vampires of the local clan and taken against his will to the Hotel Dumort.

The others eventually came to the Hotel Dumort to rescue Simon and found him hanging by chains. They managed to free him from his bonds but found themselves surrounded and outnumbered by vampires. They were saved and able to escape thanks to the arrival of Luke's werewolf pack. Simon was taken to the Institute to recover. At one point he briefly woke up and saw Clary beside him. He realized, to his surprise, that he no longer needed his glasses to see clearly. He went back to sleep soon after due to his exhaustion and Clary noticed that he had a bite mark on his collarbone. Simon woke up once more when he heard Jace and Clary talking outside the room he was staying in. He opened the door and became angry at seeing Clary and Jace kiss. Tired of her being oblivious, Simon confessed his feelings for her. At her lack of response, Simon left.

Sometime later, Simon received a text from his friend Eric that he had seen Clary heading to her apartment. Concerned, Simon went to meet them there. When he arrived, he saw her neighbor Dorothea leaving with the Mortal Cup in her pocket and Clary gesturing from the window. Realizing something strange was happening, Simon hit her with a shovel. Since she was possessed by a demon, the blow didn't harm her and only angered her. Simon managed to get her back inside the house where Jace killed her.

Back at the Institute, they were attacked by demons invoked by Valentine Morgenstern. Simon and Isabelle tried to kill them using fire but they were outnumbered. Hodge Starkweather, the tutor of the Institute, came to their aid.

After everything was over, and Jocelyn was brought to safety, Simon visited Jocelyn at the hospital and stayed with her while Clary went home for some much needed rest.[1]

Physical appearance[]

At almost six-feet tall, Simon is gangly, with curly, brown hair and green eyes. Simon also wears glasses.

Behind the scenes[]

  • This version of Simon only appeared in the film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The character, though minimally changed, was not explored beyond the film.
  • He was portrayed by Robert Sheehan. Cassandra Clare made his casting public through a Tumblr post, a while after Robert had chemistry tests with Jamie Campbell Bower (who portrayed Jace Wayland) and Lily Collins (Clary Fray). In the same post, Cassandra stated that she had always wanted Robert, of Misfits fame, to play Simon.
  • A Tumblr account for the character called Mind Of Simon Lewis was set up and launched by Sony for promotion of the film.
  • A Spotify playlist was also made for the character.
  • Simon had green eyes in the film instead of brown.
  • Simon is also some years older in the movie than his book counterpart.
  • In the book, Simon drunk a potion that turned him into a rat at Magnus Bane's party and is then mistakenly taken to the Hotel Dumort; in the film, he was drugged and abducted on purpose to lure Clary and the other Shadowhunters into the Hotel. However, in a deleted scene, Simon does state that he "felt like a rat" during his drugged state. Simon was also bit and already showing signs of becoming a vampire in the film; while he only bit Raphael Santiago in the first book and was only bit and Turned in the second.
