Biography[]
In 1903, Evangeline met and began seeing Anna Lightwood. Over the course of their brief relationship, Anna tried to break it off with her many times but always conceded. As Evangeline's wedding day to a baronet grew near, Anna chose to be cruel in her final attempt to break up with her.
Evangeline sat crying on the stairs to Anna's flat for some time and confided in Cordelia Carstairs when she came to see Anna. She told Cordelia that she greatly loved Anna and was willing to give up everything for her; and that she thought she was different from the other girls who had meant nothing to her. Anna responded from her window saying that they indeed hadn't meant anything to her, but neither had she. In her fresh burst of tears, Evangeline prepared to come back up to the flat, claiming she would not stand for this. However, her mother—whom Anna had sent for—arrived and ordered her into the carriage. Obediently, Evangeline sulkily got into the carriage and before driving off, Evangeline's mother reprimanded Anna from the street, believing her to be a man.[1]
