–Inscription on Cortana about Durendal
Durendal is one of the most famous swords in the world and the brother blade to Cortana.
Durendal is a sword with a golden hilt and a white blade "like a slice cut out of the moon".
Durendal was forged by the first Shadowhunter weapons maker, Wayland the Smith, and tempered with the same steel as its twinned blades: Joyeuse, Charlemagne's sword, and Cortana, the Carstairs’ sword. It was once owned by Roland.
In 2012, when Emma Carstairs was crossing the wall of thorns of the Unseelie Tower and the vines were surging at her, almost killing her, she wished for Cortana and it sent Durendal to her, which Emma recognized from illustrations in old books. She used Durendal to slice the vines and the hedge draw back as if afraid of the sword, opening a path to allow her and Julian Blackthorn through and making them possibly the first warriors to survive the wall. When they were safe, the sword, having completed its purpose, faded away.
Durendal, also referred to as Durandal, is said to come from the French word dur-, meaning "hard", or derived from the verb durer, meaning "endure", for the blade was unbreakable. There are, however, also non-French explanations for the origin of the name.
- Durendal is based on the mythical sword Durendal said to have been brought by an angel to Charlemagne who was at the vale of Moriane, and came to be owned by Roland, a legendary paladin of Charlemagne in French epic literature.
