Dimmet Tarn is a lake about a quarter-mile from Scholomance in the Carpathian Mountains that is shrouded by mystery.

Lore[]

Though Dimmet Tarn appears to be an ordinary lake, it is believed to have once been a place of great uncanniness. There are many theories and stories that surround the lake, but none are in agreement with each other as to the nature of its uncanniness. Some say that it was once a beloved place of the faeries; others that there was a great clutch of demonic eggs at the bottom of the tarn. Another, more far-fetched story claims that a warlock cast a spell on the water so that anyone who swam in it would develop a toe fungus that would hatch into miniature blue and green toadstools.

According to Magnus Bane, an enchantment was placed on the tarn by some warlock—or another being—so if one looked into the water for long enough they would see something of their future.[1]

History[]

In 2013, Ty Blackthorn and the ghost of his sister, Livvy Blackthorn, decided to try to discover the truth behind the tarn; believing that because Livvy was now uncanny herself, she would be able to figure it out. They had been performing many experiments to test their necromantic bond with distance and timed intervals. They chose the tarn due to its distance and the stories they had heard about it around the Scholomance.

During one of her visits, Livvy found herself a bit hypnotized by the unmoving black stillness of the waters. She attempted to submerge herself and just found black nothingness all around her. Later that night, she was drawn back to the tarn and allowed it to pull her under into the nothingness till morning. When she went to return to Ty, she noticed a Carpathian lynx kitten laying on the side, starved and bloody. Surprisingly, the kitten was able to see Livvy and began growling at her. She immediately went to get Ty to rescue her.

In the coming days, Livvy tried, again and again, to travel to other places, namely Idris, the Los Angeles Institute, and Cirenworth Hall in Devon. However, despite what she says to the contrary, her spirit was always drawn back to Dimment Tarn. No matter how much she tried to focus on another place, or no place at all, she would open her eyes and find herself above the darkness of the lake.

Eventually, after hearing Magnus's story of Dimmet Tarn, Livvy decided to stay away from the place, hoping to change the unnerving nothingness of her future that it foretold.[1]
