Delan was one of the Riders of Mannan who served the Unseelie King.

Biography[]

History[]

Delan was a powerful faerie apparently born to Mannan and lived almost since the beginning of time. In the old days, he hunted giants and monsters with his siblings.[1] They eventually started serving the Unseelie King as his personal hunters and assassins. At one point, the Hunters were dispatched by the King to hunt down and kill his daughter, Auraline, the First Heir, and her eventual offsprings.

Black Volume[]

In September 2012, Delan and his siblings were sent after the Blackthorn family to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead for the Unseelie King. Delan, Fal, Ethna, and Airmed went after Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn in Cornwall. A battle broke out, and the Riders initially overpowered the two, until Fal was killed by Emma. Delan was shocked but realized that it was due to her sword Cortana, and he held his sister Ethna back and warned her about it. He then retreated with the rest of his siblings.

He later went after the Blackthorns in London with the rest of the Riders and almost succeeded in killing Kit Herondale, until Emma sliced off his hand with Cortana. Annabel Blackthorn then appeared and threatened to reveal the Unseelie Kings's true name, so Delan retreated with his family once again.[1] When they returned to the Unseelie Lands, Delan and his siblings were assigned to guard the Unseelie Tower and the King's prisoner, Ash Morgenstern. At some point, they caught Clary Fairchild and Jace Herondale investigating the Lands and imprisoned them.

Hunting Kit[]

Shortly after, Delan and the Riders went after Kit Herondale, whom they had identified as a descendant of the First Heir, at the Cohort's parley on the Imperishable Fields. When Kit found out that they had killed his mother, Kit uncontrollably attacked them with magic, making the Riders' horses disappear in the air when they tried to flee.

They fell onto the battlefield where they engaged in the fight against the Shadowhunters and Downworlders, determined to complete the mission their late King had given them: murder the Blackthorns and their allies. During the battle, Delan went after Kieran, the new Unseelie King, but was intercepted by Diego Rosales and was later temporarily dispatched by Hypatia Vex.

When Emma and Julian's parabatai curse was activated during the battle and they turned into true Nephilim, Emma challenged the Riders. He and Ethna were the first ones to lunge at them and when Delan tried to fight giant Julian off, Julian caught him and hurled him to the earth with enough force to kill him.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Like all the Riders of Mannan, Delan was arrogant, confident in his abilities, and very loyal. He also enjoyed carrying out his missions and found his victims' fates amusing. Delan had a harsh and deep voice.[1]

Physical description[]

Delan was a tall man with radiant bronze hair woven into a thick braid that hung halfway down his back. He wore a bronze half mask, as well as bronze cloak and armor etched all over with designs of waves and the sea. After the battle at the London Institute, Delan only had one hand.[1]

Abilities[]

  • Longevity: As a Rider of Mannan, Delan was very old and had been alive for thousands of years.
  • Enhanced strength and speed: Delan was able to move incredibly fast and deal heavy blows.
  • Deceit: As a Rider of Mannan, Delan was wild magic and could lie despite being a faerie.[1]

Possessions[]

  • Delan had the bronze armor, mask, gear, and weapons, including a longsword, that all the Riders possessed, as well as a steed that coalesced from the air when summoned.
