Clarissa Adele "Clary" Fray is one of the main protagonists of the series. She is a human, a Nephilim, assumed at first to be a mundane living a normal human life, prior to the beginning of the City of Bones.

History

Clary was born to Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fray. Her mother had turned against her father's ideals months before her conception. She plotted the rebellion in hopes of killing Valentine. She would have left him. However, he would have chased after her. He would have, to use her words, moved heaven and hell while looking. On her own, she would have let him. However, she loved her daughter far too much. She wasn't willing to bring Valentine down on her. Therefore, her mother planned the Uprising.

Her mother ran from shadowhunter culture with the help of her longtime friend Lucian Graymark. She fled to New York, where she had Clary. When Clary was born, she was named Clarissa Adele Fray.

Jocelyn hoped that Clary would have a blind Inner Eye since some Shadowhunters need to be trained to see the Shadow World. However, that was not the case. Clary could see the Shadow World perfectly fine. Therefore, Jocelyn went to Magnus Bane in hopes of having him remove her Inner Eye. However, Magnus warned her that doing so would likely kill her. Therefore, he came up with the plan of casting a spell. The spell would make her forget anything of the Shadow World as she saw it. It had to be recast every two years and Clary was taken back to Magnus every time that it was necessary.

Around this time, Clary had the shadowhunter children's ritual performed on her. Jocelyn almost didn't go through with it. However, after much persuasion on the part of Magnus Bane, she agreed. Brother Zachariah of the Silent Brothers and a female Warlock, likely Tessa Gray from the hints provided, acted as the representative for the Iron Sisters.

When Clary was five years old, her mother's old friend Luke showed up at their door. For one night he was supposed to stay. That night, Jocelyn came out of her room and saw him playing an Idrisian card game with Clary that she hadn't seen since she left. It convinced her to allow Luke to become a staple part of their lives. In fact, he became so intermixed with Clary's life, she began to think of him as her father. He, in turn began to think of her as his daughter.

When Clary was six years old, she met Simon Lewis. The two grew to be inseparable. Over time, they grew to be best friends. However, Simon eventually fell in love with Clary. He hid it poorly from everyone but her. She never knew of his feelings and simply thought of him as her best friend. However, it is implied that she may have grown to love him had the events of The Mortal Instruments never occurred.

Personality

Clary is portrayed as being incredibly stubborn and a little sarcastic, but is a very caring person, with lots of compassion for her friends and family. She also often changes her mind and opinion about certain things and people around her.

Appearance

She is said to look almost exactly like her mother [1]Added by ♪lizzie♪™, with green eyes and curly red hair, thought she does not see it, nor does she see the beauty others see in her. In City of Bones, she says that she is a smaller less beautiful and more childlike version of her mother. She says that she has carroty-colored hair, rather than Jocelyn's red hair. She also says that she has a light dusting of freckles and is around 5 foot tall. It is mentioned a few times that she dresses in a boyish fashion, wearing T-shirts, jeans and sneakers.

During City of Ashes their relationship becomes complicated, they still believe they are brother and sister and so Jace starts ignoring her in hope that he can get over his feelings for her. He tries to convince Clary that it doesn't matter that they're siblings, but the idea repulses her. She tells him that they should try to act more like brother and sister, instead of lovers. In City of Glass they begin arguing a lot, for example, when Jace kisses another girl, Clary becomes angry at him. However, she also gets angry when he kisses her, showing that her feelings for him are

mixed. The two soon find out that they are not siblings and get together. In City of Fallen Angels however, Jace begins to become closed off with Clary. Later in the book, Clary and Jace find out that it was because Jace was being controlled by Lilith, the mother of all dead children.

When in Idris, Clary and her mother are reunited. Clary had spent so much energy trying to find her mother, she hadn't thought of anything else. She hadn't thought of how angry she was that she had been lied to. However, she and her mother worked out their differences soon enough.
