Born to Endless Night is the ninth short story in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan. It was released on October 20, 2015.

What happens when Magnus Bane brings a baby home to his boyfriend Alec Lightwood?

After a warlock baby is abandoned on the steps of the Academy, Magnus rescues the child—and brings him home to his boyfriend, Alec.

Simon, like the rest of the Academy, is stunned when a navy-skinned warlock baby is found on the Academy steps. They hand the child over to guest lecturer Magnus Bane, who has to bring a child home… temporarily, of course… to his man![1]

Magnus Bane arrives at the Shadowhunter Academy to give a lecture and explores the place, looking for Alec. Along the way he meets and playfully flirts with Julie Beauvale, who develops a small crush on him.

Simon Lewis heads to archery practice with his friends and discovers an abandoned blue-skinned warlock baby on the steps of the Academy. Leaving the baby with his panicking friends, Simon runs to fetch Magnus, who takes the baby from George; he reads the note found with the child and determines it's a boy. Dean Penhallow arrives with Catarina Loss, and Alec pushes through the growing crowd to be with Magnus.

There is a debate on whether to call the Clave, but Magnus refuses to leave the baby with them and claims that he and Alec will take care of it. Simon is relieved.

Hours later when the baby has fallen alseep Magnus goes outside to get some air and meets Lily Chen, who demands to see Alec. Magnus takes her back to the Academy and finds the entire Lightwood family, including Clary, in the room.

Lily calls out to Alec by his last name, and Robert Lightwood mistakes it as meant for him until Lily rudely dismisses him and explains to Alec that one of her vampires, Elliott, has bitten a mundane under the influence of faerie fruit and has been filmed while intoxicated. Alec reassures her that the issue will be taken care of, and she leaves after saying hello to the baby.

The Lightwoods start discussing baby names and childproofing, and Magnus realises they think him and Alec will keep the baby. They suggest Max Lightwood as a name.

While eating dinner with his fellow students Simon is bombarded with questions about Magnus by Julie and Beatriz and lectures them on how disconcerting he finds their interest in his "famous" friends. Julie and Beatriz react strangely and leave the dining hall, and Simon realizes that they both like him. He contemplates how to let them down gently but his thoughts are interrupted by the appearance of Isabelle, who he greets with a kiss.

After everyone leaves Magnus and Alec discuss keeping the baby; Alec reveals that he wants to keep it because of his brother Max, who he never got to see grow up. Magnus agrees to keeping the baby but when Alec mentions marriage Magnus gently refuses, and instead promises to marry him only once Shadowhunters and Downworlders are allowed to get married in traditional Shadowhunter ceremonies.

Magnus and Catarina later take a walk to Ragnor Fell's old rooms, where Catarina has been sleeping. She shows Magnus an old letter written to Ragnor by the late Raphael Santiago, which Ragnor never got the chance to read, and they reminisce about those they've lost while marvelling at the changes that Simon has inspired between the elites and dregs at the Academy.

Simon speaks with Alec about their friendship, as Simon believes that Alec doesn't like him; Alec explains that he acted coolly around Simon because Simon saved Magnus from Asmodeus instead of him, then lost his memory before Alec could thank him and he didn't know how to act. They reaffirm their friendship.

Magnus returns to his room, having made a decision regarding the baby, and announces that he will be called Max Lightwood, to everyone's delight. While they argue over middle names Magnus moves to another room and kisses his son, murmuring reassurances to him that they're all in this together.

  • The title may have been derived from the Auguries of Innocence, a poem by William Blake which tells of "a series of paradoxes which speak of innocence juxtaposed with evil and corruption."
  • This short story is told from two characters' point of view, namely: Simon and Magnus.
