Auraline is the First Heir, the child of the King of the Unseelie Court and the Queen of the Seelie Court. She eventually married the Shadowhunter Roland of the lost Herondale line. Hunted by her father, Auraline was forced into hiding with her family.
Biography[]
Birth[]
Auraline was born out of a momentary truce between the King and Queen of the two Courts of Faerie. The two had agreed that their child would inherit their thrones and unite Faerie, but when a daughter was born, the King was displeased, having hoped for a son to be raised a great warrior. Nonetheless, the King kept her in his lands, causing further tension between the King and the Queen.
In the Unseelie Court, she was raised by Mother Hawthorn. At one point, it was prophesized that "the day the First Heir reached for their full power, all of Faerie would fall under shadow." This angered the King and worried the Queen, intensifying the war between Seelie and Unseelie, and there soon came whispers that she was cursed.
Mortal love[]
Auraline fled to the mortal world and began going to Shadow Markets, where Auraline enjoyed mingling with Downworlders and mundanes who did not know her history. After decades of visiting the Market, she met a magician Roland Loss who came to learn that he was a Shadowhunter. Roland and Auraline shared the knowledge of their secret heritage with one another and the pair found refuge with each other. They ran away together, angering the King, who wanted to keep the prophecy a secret and sent his messengers and his assassins after her.
She traveled with Roland to whichever Shadow Markets he performed at. The couple spent many decades together, with Auraline using her faerie power to keep Roland young and alive as long as she could.[1] They had a child together, thus continuing the line of lost Herondales and of the First Heir.[2][1]
In 1936, she accompanied Roland as he performed tricks at the Mysterious Merchants' Bazaar of the Bizarre in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On the 23rd of October, during one of Roland's shows, she spotted a goblin that seemed to have gotten her scent. They were also seen, but not recognized initially, by Brother Zachariah. The family fled very shortly after.[2]
When Roland died of old age, Auraline chose to die with him.[1]
Legacy[]
Because of the King's secrecy, few people knew her true story. The belief that spread in Faerie was that the First Heir was stolen or murdered around or before the 1800s. According to Adaon, the King had since wanted to get ahold of the Black Volume of the Dead.[3]
Physical description[]
Auraline has blond hair.
Like most highborn fey, she has the semblance of humans and appears ageless.[2]
Skills and abilities[]
- "Commands perfect love and loyalty": Due to spells cast upon her at her parents' discretion, all who come within her presence felt naturally inclined to serve and protect her, with very few able to resist the urge to drop their other priorities for her.
- Magic: As a faerie, Auraline was able to use the powerful and ancient magic of her race. The full extent of her powers—as given to her by a number of enchantments—was never explored but a prophecy about it suggested that it would have been great once she achieved her full power. These powers were passed through her progeny and manifested in Kit Herondale.
- Longevity: Like all full-blooded faeries, she aged at an extremely slow rate and had the ability to choose when to die—which she did when her husband passed away.
