I am Airmed, son of Mannan. We are the children of a god, you see. We are much older than the Wild Hunt, and much more powerful.

–Airmed introducing himself and his siblings, Lord of Shadows

Airmed was one of the Riders of Mannan who served the Unseelie King.

Biography[]

History[]

Airmed was a powerful faerie apparently born to Mannan and lived almost since the beginning of time. In the old days, he hunted giants and monsters with his siblings.[1] Eventually, they became sworn to the King of the Unseelie Court and started serving him as his personal hunters and assassins. At one point, the Hunters were dispatched by the King to hunt down and kill his daughter, Auraline the First Heir, and her eventual offsprings.

Black Volume[]

In 2012, Airmed and his siblings were sent after the Blackthorn family to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead for the Unseelie King. Airmed went after Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn in Cornwall, along with Delan, Ethna and Fal, while the rest pursued two other Blackthorns in London.

In a confrontation on Chapel Cliff, Airmed and his siblings fought Emma and Julian until Emma unexpectedly killed Fal with her sword Cortana. Airmed tried to retaliate but was disarmed by Julian. When Delan realized her blade's potential power, Airmed used his magic to call the Riders' flying steeds and they retreated.

He later attacked the Blackthorns in London with all his remaining siblings, using a human child to lure them out of the Institute. They almost succeeded in killing the Blackthorns until Annabel Blackthorn arrived and drove them away by threatening to reveal the Unseelie King's name.[1] When they returned to the Unseelie Lands, Airmed and his siblings were assigned to guard the Unseelie Tower and the King's prisoner, Ash Morgenstern. At some point, they caught Clary Fairchild and Jace Herondale investigating the Lands and imprisoned them.

Hunting Kit[]

Shortly after, Airmed and the Riders went to the parley staged by Oban and the Cohort at the Imperishable Fields, intending to murder Kit Herondale for being a descendant of the First Heir. When they told him that they had killed his mother, Kit uncontrollably attacked them with magic, making the Riders’ horses disappear in the air when they tried to flee.

They fell onto the battlefield where they engaged in the fight against the Shadowhunters and Downworlders, determined to complete the mission their late King had given them—murder the Blackthorns and their allies—before they were temporarily dispatched by Hypatia Vex.

When Emma and Julian's parabatai curse was activated during the battle and they turned into true Nephilim, Emma challenged the Riders. Even after they murdered Ethna and Delan, Airmed did not run and was killed on the battlefield while trying to fight them.[2]

Personality[]

As an ancient and powerful faerie, Airmed was very confident in his power and proud of his heritage. He was very loyal to the Unseelie King and to his siblings and was disdainful of his enemies.

Physical description[]

Airmed was a tall man with a sharply chiseled jaw and bronze braided hair that hung halfway down his back. He wore a bronze half mask as well as a bronze cloak and armor etched all over with designs of waves and the sea.

Abilities[]

  • Longevity: As a Rider of Mannan, Airmed was very old and had been alive for thousands of years.
  • Enhanced strength and speed: Airmed was able to move incredibly fast and deal heavy blows.
  • Deceit: As a Rider of Mannan, Airmed was wild magic and could lie despite being a faerie.[1]
  • Invulnerability: Airmed is immune to most Shadowhunter magic such as seraph blades and cannot be killed by conventional means.

Possessions[]

  • Airmed had the bronze armor, mask, gear, and weapons, including a longsword, that all the Riders possessed, as well as a steed that coalesced from the air when summoned.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • In Irish mythology, Airmed was a goddess and a part of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a race of supernatural beings. She healed those injured in the Second Battle of Magh Tuiredh. She is believed to be the only one who knows all the secrets of herbalism. She is also one of the enchanters whose incantation sung over the well of Sláine was able to resurrect the dead.[3]
