The Cartwright family is a family of Shadowhunters.
History[]
Grace Blackthorn was originally born as Grace Cartwright. She and her parents resided in Idris, a bit secluded from their fellow Cartwrights and Shadowhunters in general. She was orphaned at the age of seven when her parents were killed by demons. Grace was initially to be sent to live with her father's cousin, however Tatiana Blackthorn intervened. As these relatives were already struggling to manage their own kids, they readily agreed to Tatiana's large sum of money for Grace. Grace soon, seemingly, forgot her parents and eagerly gave her loyalty and name to the Blackthorn family.[1]
In 1899, James Herondale attended Shadowhunter Academy with Clive Cartwright. The latter was killed by a Vetis demon during a prank gone wrong.[2]
In 2008, Simon Lewis attended the same academy with Jon Cartwright. They became friends, along with Julie Beauvale, Beatriz Mendoza, George Lovelace, and Marisol Garza.[3] After graduating the academy, Jon proceeded to study at the Scholomance, and eventually became a member of the Cohort. In 2012, he was savagely murdered Malcolm Fade and his demons. His head was delivered to the Los Angeles Institute.[4]

Etymology[]
The surname Cartwright is of English origin, and means "maker of carts".[5]
Trivia[]
- According to Magnus Bane, members of this family all have thick necks, which makes them easily recognizable.[6]
- Grace Blackthorn claimed the family motto to be Loyaulté Me Lie—Loyalty Binds Me—as that was the inscription of the bracelet she gave James Herondale.[7] However, the bracelet was not a family heirloom and thus the quote is suspected to not truly be their motto.[1]
